What Is ABA Therapy? A Parent's Guide

If your child has recently been diagnosed with autism, you've probably heard the term ABA therapy more than once. It can sound clinical at first — but the idea behind it is simple and hopeful: help children build the skills that make everyday life easier, one small, achievable step at a time.

So, what is ABA?

ABA stands for Applied Behavior Analysis. It's a science-based approach that uses positive reinforcement and data-driven strategies to help children with Autism Spectrum Disorder develop new skills and reduce behaviors that get in the way of learning. Every plan is built and supervised by a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).

How it actually works

A trained professional observes your child, identifies meaningful goals with your family, and designs a personalized plan. Desired behaviors are encouraged through reinforcement, and progress is measured continuously so the plan can be adjusted as your child grows. Big goals — like communicating a need or joining a group activity — are broken into small, joyful wins.

Good to know: ABA is not about changing who your child is. Autism is not a disease, and your child does not need to be "cured." ABA simply builds practical skills and confidence.

Where does it happen?

Therapy can take place wherever it's most helpful — in the comfort of your home, at one of our centers in the Bronx and Brooklyn, or a combination of both. Not sure which fits? We compare the options in In-Home vs. Center-Based ABA.

Getting started

The first step is a short intake. We verify your insurance, a BCBA assesses your child's needs, and therapy begins with ongoing support for your whole family. You can start your intake here whenever you're ready.
