Early Signs of Autism: What to Look For

Every child grows at their own pace, and no single sign means a child is autistic. Still, knowing the common early signs can help you decide whether an evaluation might be helpful — and earlier support often makes a meaningful difference.

Common early signs

Autism shows up differently in every child, but families and clinicians often notice patterns across a few areas:

  • Social communication: difficulty reading facial expressions, understanding sarcasm, or maintaining back-and-forth conversation.
  • Repetitive behaviors: hand-flapping, rocking, or repeating words and phrases (called echolalia).
  • Strong focus: intense passions or deep, sustained interest in specific topics.
  • Sensory sensitivities: being very sensitive — or under-sensitive — to sound, light, textures, or smells.
Remember: autism is not a disease. A child who is autistic simply experiences and processes the world differently. Read more on our Understanding Autism section.

When to seek an evaluation

If several of these signs feel familiar, or you simply have a gut feeling, it's worth talking to a professional. An evaluation isn't about labels — it's about understanding your child and unlocking the right support.

How ABA can help

If your child is diagnosed, ABA therapy can help them build communication, social, and daily-living skills at a pace that's right for them. Our BCBA-led team designs a plan around your child — reach out any time to talk it through.
